DVT risk's of Office workers

Office workers who spend hours on their computer face a higher risk of developing potentially fatal blood clots, a report has warned.

Researchers from the Medical Research Institute in New Zealand examined a sample of 62 people admitted to hospital with deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

They found that a third of these patients were office workers who spent long periods at a desk, compared with 21 per cent who had recently travelled on a long-haul flight.

Lead researcher Professor Richard Beasley, of the Medical Research Institute, said: "The risk is certainly there.

"There are considerably more people who are seated for long periods at work as part of their normal day than there are travelling.

"The problem was most common in the information technology industry and in call-centres."

DVT is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg. The condition kills up to 1,000 people in the UK each year.

The study will be published in the New Zealand Medical Journal.

According to the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), office workers are also among the most likely to suffer from back pain.

Poor posture while sat at a computer was the main reason for this, the BCA said.
